Essential emergency guide for Japan. Lost passport, earthquake, missed last train, medical emergency and more.
Lost Your Passport
- Go to the nearest koban (police box) to file a report.
- Contact your country's embassy in Tokyo immediately.
- You'll need: police report, passport photos (konbini photo booths work), and a copy of your passport.
- Emergency travel documents can be issued within 1-3 business days.
Pro tip: Always keep a photo of your passport on your phone AND email a copy to yourself before traveling.
Earthquake Happens
- DROP, COVER, HOLD — Get under a table or desk.
- Stay away from windows and heavy objects.
- If outdoors, move to an open area away from buildings.
- Follow Japanese people — they are well-trained for earthquakes.
- Check the Safety Tips app for official warnings.
- If near the coast, move to higher ground (tsunami risk).
Japan's buildings are among the most earthquake-resistant in the world. Stay calm.
Missed the Last Train
- Option 1: Manga Cafe (漫画喫茶) — Private booths with reclining chairs for ¥1,500-3,000/night.
- Option 2: Karaoke — Rent a room until first trains (5 AM). Often cheaper than a hotel!
- Option 3: Capsule Hotel — Walk-ins welcome at most. ¥3,000-5,000.
- Option 4: Night bus — Some routes run through the night.
- Option 5: Taxi — Expensive but available. Use the GO app.
Medical Emergency
- Dial 119 for ambulance (free in Japan!).
- Say: "Kyuukyuusha onegaishimasu" (Please send an ambulance).
- Hospitals with English-speaking staff: search "AMDA International Medical Info Center" or call 03-5285-8088.
- Pharmacies (ドラッグストア): Matsumoto Kiyoshi and Sundrug are everywhere. Point at symptoms on Google Translate.
Lost an Item
Japan has an incredibly high lost-and-found return rate (83% of wallets are returned with cash intact!).
- On a train: Ask at the station's lost-and-found office (忘れ物センター).
- On the street: Check the nearest koban (police box).
- In a taxi: Note the taxi company name and call them.
- JR Lost and Found: Items are kept at the station for 2 weeks, then sent to Tokyo central.
